A voyage into the Korowai’s stone-age world

The Korowai live together in small family clans on their isolated territory in houses built high up in the Teres- from 20 to as high as 100 feet up.

Are a people of southeastern West Papua (north of the Dairam Kabur), one of the most remote and hostile areas on earth. Their swampy area is approximately 600 km² bid. In this difficult area are living up to 2500 Korowai. Until the 1975s, they were unaware of the existence of any people besides themselves and some immediately neighboring villages. Only a few of them have becomeliterate thus far. The village absenteeism rate is still high, because of the relatively long distance between the settlements and the food (sago) resources.
